Holiday Letter from Dr. Jason Bokar

Dear Chessfriends,

First, I would like to wish you all Happy Holidays and a coming Happy New Year! I wish you all success in chess and in all that you do!

As you know, this year has seen some changes at ICCF-US. Corky Schakel had stepped down after the Congress in Wales, and I took over just after. The transition has been smooth as Corky is still very much involved and helping on a day to day basis! Of course, there is still a learning curve for me, and I have both Corky and Tom Biedermann to thank for their consistent help!

I would also like to personally thank everyone who donates their time to make ICCF-US work well and make our hobby the enjoyable experience that it is! Special thanks to the ICCF-US board:

  • SIM Dan Perry (webmaster)
  • IM Bob Rizzo (Titles)
  • SIM Kristo Miettinen (TD and TO)
  • SIM Tom Biedermann (Treasurer + ICCF-US Deputy Director + NAPZ TO)
  • Dennis Doren (ICCF Rules Commissioner + TO and TD + Friendly match coordinator)
  • IM Tony Kain (hardware and software support)
  • SIM Carl Siefring (TO and invitational decision maker)
  • SIM Ken Holroyd (also TO and invitations).
Also, note that SIM Michael Millstone serves as ICCF General Secretary

On a sad note, we also have to remember our dear friend Glen Shields, who served as NAPZ TO and liaison to CCLA, passed away suddenly this year. I greatly appreciate Tom Biedermann for stepping in.

I very much want to thank all of you, the players who make up ICCF-US. Without you, we wouldn't exist! I am always open to anyone's suggestions or if you have interest in volunteering - please let me know! We always have room for helping hands!

Once again, I wish you a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Jason Bokar, ICCF-US Director and NAPZ Director.

(p.s. And a special Merry Christmas to my dearest SN, who is a light that shines bright even on the darkest nights, and who can find blue skies even if there might be clouds...!)

August 24, 2015 ---- Corrected September 15, 2015 (Wieland Belka added to SIM Awardees)

2015 Congress Highlights

The high point of any Congress is receiving the awards earned by our players. This year the SIM medal and certificate were presented for Ken Holroyd and Wieland Belka, and IM medals and certificates for Tony Kain and Tom Williams. Certificates and medals were presented for 12th North American Championship, first through third, for Ken Holroyd, Kristo Miettinen, and Tom Biedermann. The silver Bertl von Massow award for ten years of service to ICCF was presented to Michael Millstone and Corky Schakel. A first place team certificate was presented for Wolff Morrow and Wieland Belka for the 7th Interzonal Team Tournament. The German federation presented a certificate to Dan Fleetwood for 1st place 10 Jahre Schachschule Pirs in Deutschland Gruppe A. Congratulations to all!

Minutes with all votes on proposals will be posted on https://iccf.com ; a few notes follow.

  1. Funding passed for a study to have norms based on opponents’ ratings in an event, and individual players will not have their own rating used to calculate a category. This is a much more fair system for calculating norms, server technology allowing it to be implemented. It will make it a bit more difficult for Tournament Organizers since a Category will not have quite the same meaning.
  2. New titles were approved, CC Expert and CC Master. Certificates will be presented by email.
  3. Titles will officially be awarded when achieved, not waiting for a vote by Congress.
  4. Olympiad 20 Team Final and Olympiad 22 Team Prelim will start 15 December 2015.
  5. All proposals to do with reflection time and leave were tabled, sent to a working group.
  6. Zonal promotional events will now be counted for calculating International Arbiter titles, and this will include past games.
  7. The positions of Arbiters Committee Chair and Rules Commissioner were combined, and Dennis Doren was elected as Rules Commissioner (congratulations to Dennis!). There will be some online training to keep TDs current with changes in rules and server technology changes.

The personal highlight for me was good wishes exchanged with so many long term friends, and turning the ICCF-US Director job over to Jason Bokar. My thanks go to all the ICCF-US volunteers who have helped so much over the last eight years.

ICCF-US has begun play in a 26-board Friendly Match against a team from Cuba after being challenged to a rematch by them. (We lost a match against Cuba recently 47.5 - 36.5, so their challenge must represent that we are an enjoyable team to play against.) Our first board is being played by SIM Ciaran O'Hare. Turkey - USA Friendly Match, an EPIC Match Started

ICCF-US has begun play in two sections against a team from Turkey. The idea for dividing this Friendly Match into two sections was from the Turkey Organizer, with a split between the two sections at a rating of 2300. Section A consists of a 15-board TRULY EPIC Friendly Match. Our first board is being played by the USA's highest rated active player GM Alik Zilberberg. He is paired against GM Tansel Turgut who is currently the 23rd highest rated active player in the ICCF. Both players are rated over 2600. The average ratings for the top 6 players from Turkey and the USA are 2518 and 2523 respectively. Among our top 7 players are 4 GMs, 2 SIMs, and 1 IM. Overall, 9 of the 15 players on the USA team in this section are titled players! Section B, a 23-board section, is headed by a long-time supporter of the Friendly Matches, David White on first board. SIM Thomas Biedermann is the USA Team Captain for both sections of this friendly match. You can find the two different sections of this match at the following URLs, for Sections A and B respectively: https://www.iccf.com/event?id=53538 and https://www.iccf.com/event?id=53539.

GM Jason Bokar to ICCF-US Director

GM Jason Bokar will take over as ICCF-US Director during the ICCF-US Congress in Cardiff, Wales August 2015. As NAPZ Director Jason continues as an ICCF Executive Board member. Jason was ICCF-US Deputy for several years prior to 2007 when he took a job transfer to France, so was unable to take the ICCF-US Director position at that time. Jason received the Bertl von Massow Silver medal for ten years of exceptional service to ICCF at the Krakow, Poland Congress in 2013.

Jason is one of the top rated players in ICCF-US, and has represented us in the Olympiad Finals twice, finished fifth in World Championship 24 concluded in 2012, and is currently playing in a WCCC Candidates Tournament. Thank you, Jason, for volunteering to take on the duties as ICCF-US Director! Jason has asked all current ICCF-US Board members to continue their volunteer roles.

SIM Tom Biederman, ICCF-US Deputy Director

SIM Tom Biedermann is appointed as ICCF-US Deputy Director, maintaining all current duties including including Treasurer. For the last three years Tom has handled finances for ICCF-US, including processing all entries, and has helped with recruiting players to fill out brackets and selecting recipients for invitations for ICCF-US and events from other National Federations. Tom will be a major help as ICCF-US makes the transition to GM Jason Bokar as ICCF-US Director. Tom has represented us on numerous teams, winning a silver team medal for the 10th Pan Am team, and helping qualify our team for the next Olympiad Final. He has played many WCCCs, including Candidates Tournament 30. And he won USCCC 16.

I look forward to continuing on our Board, to handle New Player applications, and help with invitations for those others on the Board who are reluctant to choose themselves to play in major events. My thanks to all players for making the last eight years as our National Federation Rep rewarding, and just lots of fun. Special thanks go to the ICCF-US Board. Those who have been volunteers for the last eight years are SIM Dan Perry (webmaster), IM Bob Rizzo (Titles), and SIM Kristo Miettinen (TD and TO). For the last three years ICCF-US has experienced great growth in number of players, and in success achieving norms and titles. This was possible because of added volunteers to the Board: SIM Tom Biedermann (Treasurer), Dennis Doren (TO and TD), IM Tony Kain (hardware and software support), Glen Shields (NAPZ TO and liaison to CCLA), SIM Carl Siefring (TO and invitational decision maker), and SIM Ken Holroyd (recently added to help with TO and invitations).

ICCF-US players have volunteered for ICCF positions: SIM Michael Millstone (General Secretary), GM Jason Bokar (NAPZ Director), Dennis Doren (Arbiter Committee Chair), IM Corky Schakel (Appeals Committee/Other ICCF Rules), and IM Tony Kain is providing great support to the Rating Commissioner. There is no doubt that those above and others will be adding titles in future years!
